Profile

The Lhasa Apso is a small yet spirited breed that carries a rich heritage of loyalty and watchfulness. Originally used as watchdogs in Tibetan monasteries, these regal dogs possess a natural protective instinct for their homes while providing warmth and affection to their families. Their elegant long, flowing coat and watchful eyes are as impressive as their temperament.

Independent and adaptable, Lhasa Apsos do well in households where they are given regular training and lots of affection. They learn routines easily  and love interactive play sessions, but their dignified nature is still apparent in their calm attitude. They need regular grooming to maintain their luxurious coat in top condition, a testament to the breed’s royal heritage.

History

Lhasa Apso possesses a deep, old history that existed for more than a thousand years in Tibet. Tibetan monks bred these small but hardy dogs to protect monasteries and temples, utilizing their sharp senses to sense any intruders. Lhasa Apsos were greatly esteemed as watchdogs though they were small in size, as they were thought to confer good fortune and protection.

For centuries, Lhasa Apsos were revered as sacred dogs, very seldom leaving Tibet other than as gifts from the Dalai Lama to outsiders. It wasn’t until the 20th century that the breed crossed over into the Western world, where they gained popularity very quickly due to their loyal temperament, intelligence, and plush coat.

Nowadays, the Lhasa Apso makes a popular family pet, regarded for its monarch-like charm, independent nature, and inherent guard instincts. Despite no longer having temple-guard duties, they are still faithful, loving family animals, offering security and love within their households.
