History
The Pug is an old breed with a long history of more than 2,000 years. The Pug originated in China and was bred as imperial lapdogs for Chinese emperors. They were greatly valued for their friendly nature and unique appearance. They were commonly seen in imperial palaces, leading luxurious lives with their royal masters. These tiny dogs were regarded as good luck charms and were even protected by soldiers to keep them safe.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Pugs were introduced to Europe by Dutch merchants and became favorites among the nobility there. The breed was given royal status in Holland, France, and England, becoming famously the official dog of the Dutch royal House of Orange. Queen Victoria of England was a dedicated Pug owner and helped further the popularity of the breed.
Today, Pugs are still one of the world’s most popular companion breeds. Their loving hearts, playful disposition, and their characteristic wrinkled faces still capture the hearts of dog lovers everywhere.
